If you’re have a sweet tooth and an itch to travel, this is for you. It’s undeniable that chocolate is loved around the world, but where do chocoholics go to for a chocolate history lesson and a taste of this popular sweet treat?
Stop 1 – Cologne, Germany
This popular tourist destination is home to the Stollwerck Chocolate Company, which used to be the second largest supplier of chocolate to America. It houses the Imhoff-Schokoladenmuseum as well, a mind-blowing museum which celebrates the history of chocolate. One of the best parts of this museum is the three-metre tall chocolate fountain. It’s big enough to swim in, although we wouldn’t suggest it!
Stop 2 – Tain L’Hermitage, France
Hidden away in gorgeous wine country is the picturesque Tain L’Hermitage – home of the famous chocolatier, Valrhona. One stop we would suggest visiting is the Valrhona Ecole du Grand Chocolat, a chocolate school which teaches professional chefs, chocolatiers, and caterers the secrets of gourmet chocolates. They even host a three-day course that teaches tourists how to make the most beautiful desserts. Where do we sign up?!
Stop 3 – Oaxaca, Mexico
Welcome to the home of chocolate, where the journey of chocolate began centuries ago. Modern Mexico continues to celebrate its past, where travellers can’t walk down the street without being offered a melt-in-the-mouth chocolate. While the chocolate market has become quite commercial in South Africa, a large portion of the Mexican population continues to make chocolate using old family recipes, passed down from generation to generation. If you’re looking for history, this is the place to visit.
Stop 4 – Hershey, Pennsylvania
The home of Hershey’s chocolates, this little town has been dubbed “Chocolatetown” as well as “The Sweetest Place on Earth”. Hershey’s Chocolate World is a factory store that provides an extensive virtual tour ride of The Hershey Company. From chocolate and wine pairings to chocolate lab classes and a full on chocolate dessert buffet, the Hotel Hershey is a chocolate lover’s dream destination.
With all of the above in mind, you’re probably salivating! We know you’d love to book a holiday to one of these inspiring destinations, but if your budget doesn’t allow it just yet, why not take a trip around the world – through chocolate? My Chocolate Box is a subscription service that ensures members get a different box of chocolates every month, often with treats from around the world.
